WE GIVE PREFERENCE
TO PUREBRED BORDER COLLIES IN NEED
We will consider Border Collie mixes on a space
availability basis and on our estimation of
the placeability of the individual dog through
our organization.
Medical records
You may be required to pay a relinquishing
fee of between $75 and $150 to cover the costs
that we will have for your dog if he/she:
- is not spayed or neutered
- is not up to date on
vaccinations
- is not current on heartworm
and flea/tick preventatives
- has no current medical
records
We require copies of your dog's vet records
at the time of relinquishment. If you do not
have them available, you will be asked
to provide us with your vet's contact information
so that we can request them.
Temperament evaluation
Before we accept a dog, it must be evaluated
by one of our representatives. We cannot
accept any dog that shows aggressive behavior
toward humans or other dogs, or has a history
of biting. You will be required to sign
a relinquishing contract which indicates that
you are aware of any behavioral problems your
dog has exhibited while in your possession.
If your dog is aggressive, it is your responsibility
to either find a behaviorist or trainer who
can help you with this problem, or to have your
dog euthanized yourself. It is not fair to a
dog to be put to sleep among strangers, and
it isn't fair to us to ask us to do this for
you, which is what will have to happen if your
dog shows aggression after you relinquish it.
It is also not ethical, fair or humane to put
our volunteers and/or the public at large in
danger by not disclosing your dog's potentially
dangerous behavior.
We are happy to recommend trainers/behaviorists
in your area to help you with your dogs behavior
problems. Please contact
us for more information.
All NEBCR dogs are in foster care a minimum
of 2 weeks, so that we can thoroughly evaluated
their behavior. We will not place a dog directly
from an owner's home.
PLEASE
BE AWARE: In the Northeast today
there are few farms left, and most farmers adopting
a dog want one that can work for them, not one
with a lot of behavior problems. Most towns
and all cities have leash laws and dogs cannot
be left to run free. Most people looking for
a dog, even a Border Collie, live in the suburbs
and want a pet. We try to place each dog in
the most appropriate home for that dog. If your
dog shows real herding potential, we will attempt
to place it in a working situation, but that
is not always possible. We also give preference
to people that will be involved in dog sports,
or at least who are active.
Please don't ask us to find a home for your
dog "on a farm" or where it can "run
free". Contrary to what many people believe,
this will not meet your dog's needs. Border
Collies require human attention as much as regular
exercise.
If you should
decide that you prefer to keep your dog,
we would be happy to help you in any way we
can.
Important note
It is not our policy to provide relinquishing
owners with specific information or the location
of where your dog is fostered and eventually
adopted. You will be required to sign a relinquishment
agreement in which you give up the rights of
ownership of your dog to the care of NEBCR,
Inc. You will not have input as to who/where
your dog is fostered or adopted, and you must
trust that we will make all decisions in your
dog's best interests, and based on our many
years of experience in rescue and with Border
Collies as a breed. We can provide you with
general updates on your dog's well-being only.
IF an adopter wishes to be in contact with you,
we can pass along your information to them if
you request it, but it will be up to them to
contact you.
NEBCR's primary goal is
to find the best possible homes for all dogs
relinquished to our care.
If after having read this entire page you
still wish to give up your dog, please contact
us via:

PLEASE NOTE: we
are an all volunteer organization, and do not
have someone manning the phone lines 24/7. We
will do our very best to get back to you as
soon as possible. If you send us an email and
do not hear back from someone in a few days,
please check back with us to make sure your
message has been received.
